On your bike!
The government’s Cycle to Work scheme encourages employees to leave the car at home, forget about the bus and instead get some fresh air and exercise by using an efficient new bike for daily travel.
Numerous cycle companies participate in the initiative, and OSL has chosen Evans Cycles as its provider. Mechanical Engineer Daniel Peary, who joined the company in September 2012, has always loved cycling, so he gets to and from the Hull office using his Kona road bike.
“It works out much quicker,” said Daniel. “Each week I’ll travel about fifteen miles in total just for work, but I also love taking my bike to the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Moors and the Peak District with mates whenever I get the chance. It’s great fun and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys riding.”
Backed by HMRC, bikes are purchased by OSL and team members then rent them from the company through monthly payroll deductions, free of tax. This makes bike ownership easy, affordable and incredibly flexible.
The Evans Cycles Ride2Work scheme, which is just one of many available, has other benefits, including up to £50 of free accessories when you buy a new bike, with 50% off servicing so that it can be kept in peak condition without breaking the bank.
“It’s a very cost-effective option,” said Daniel. “Plus it gives me a sense of freedom and helps to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions. I’d love to see as many people take part as possible as it really is the smart option. It just makes so much sense to take advantage of the government’s Cycle to Work scheme.”
