The Running Men

Show macmillan al and neil

OSL often sponsors worthy causes, such as a young lad who raised money through a canoe challenge in order to visit an African village to help build a school, and one of our Senior C&I Designers who ran the Edinburgh Marathon in aid of a children’s hospice, so when Darren Fitzgerald contacted us, we simply couldn’t say no.

Darren is a taxi driver for Hull Cars who often drives OSL staff members to work and back; he’s 36 and used to play rugby league for Hull KR. Throughout October, Darren and his friend Mark Moore (also a former rugby league player but for Hull FC, now working in the caravan industry) are running 10k every day in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

“Darren initially approached us asking for a specific amount,” said Operations Manager Neil Barnard, “but we were so impressed and moved by their spirit that we’re offering them more than twice that toward their goal.”

“We hope to raise around £1,200,” said Darren. “Macmillan is an organisation that supports people and families who have to suffer the trauma of dealing with cancer. They send nurses into people's homes to help with treatments, dressings and medicines. They provide support for families in the form of someone to speak to when everything gets too much. Macmillan are an invaluable charity, and on a personal note, they greatly helped my own family when my granddad died of cancer in 2005, allowing him to be with loved ones until the end. Each time I run I see my granddad on his final day alive and it powers me on."

The dedicated duo will start one run in particular from OSL House, and the plan is for the last one to finish at their favourite pub with a well-earned beer. “Our local is The Goldcrest on Victoria Dock,” said Mark, “and we’re sure we’ll have quite a thirst after running 310 kilometers in a month!”
