LPG CONTAMINANTS FEED STUDY

BACKGROUND

Total had a problem at their Immingham refinery with contaminants in the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) product stream. A plant was required that could remove these using absorbents to improve the quality of the stream to increase its value.

The project ran from feasibility to end of feed, with full front-end design, cost assessment and HAZOP assessment being completed.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The design covered two parts for the removal of contaminant: an absorber system and a regeneration system.

A relief and vent system was designed that would tie into the existing flare system.

Process modelling and a product specification document were created to enable Total to visualise the end result.

The output of the FEED, including the finalised plan allowed Total to initiate the detail design, procurement and construction phase.

KEY ASPECTS OF DELIVERY

  • Safety Assessment – compliance with Total’s safety policies and statutory regulations for the storage of flammables under pressure, such as LPG.
  • FEED Design incorporating process, mechanical, civil structural, instrumentation and electrical disciplines.

CLEVER THINKING

The design incorporated the reuse and validation of existing equipment and also included minimal automation to ensure the system capital cost was minimised.

It also included an economic assessment between using a regenerated system and sacrificial system to determine the best lifecycle cost.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT

  • Improved grade of LPG available for sale.
  • Better market price for the LPG product.
  • LPG previously had to be sent to offsite for further processing, this can be avoided with Total having their own facilities, saving on costs, timescale and logistical requirements.
